Common ACCA Myths Indian Students Believe

Common ACCA Myths Indian Students Believe

Every week in our counselling sessions in Jaipur, we hear the same handful of “facts” about ACCA — usually sourced from a cousin, a WhatsApp group or a coaching institute selling something else. Most of them are years out of date or simply wrong. Let’s bust them one by one, with evidence.

Myth 1: “ACCA has no value in India”

The most damaging myth, and the most outdated. The Big 4 firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG), global capability centres and MNCs across India actively recruit ACCA affiliates and members for audit, financial reporting, and advisory roles, at fresher packages broadly comparable to CA hires in similar profiles. What is true: only Indian CAs can sign statutory audit reports in India. If your goal is signing authority or your own practice in India, do CA. For virtually every corporate finance and Big 4 career path, ACCA is fully bankable — in India and in 180+ countries.

Myth 2: “ACCA is easy — that’s why people choose it”

Tell that to the 59% who failed Performance Management in June 2026. Official pass rates from the June 2026 sitting: PM 41%, AA 47%, FM 48%, and Advanced Audit and Assurance at just 39%. Every paper carries a fixed 50% pass mark with no curve. ACCA feels more achievable than CA not because the papers are easier, but because the structure is fairer: one paper at a time, four sittings a year, and a failed paper costs you that paper — not an entire group.

Myth 3: “ACCA is only for rich students”

The full statutory cost is roughly Rs.1.7–2.6 lakh — spread over about three years, paid exam by exam, not upfront. A B.Com student on the conditional exemption route pays the least (registration discounted, exemption fees fully waived, first-year subscription waived through an Approved Learning Partner). Spread across 3 years, the outlay is comparable to — often below — what families routinely spend on other professional paths, and the earning start comes earlier.

Myth 4: “You can’t do ACCA with a regular B.Com”

The opposite is true: B.Com is the ideal companion. B.Com students get 5 paper exemptions, can pursue both simultaneously, and finish degree plus qualification together around age 21–22. CA Inter qualified students with B.Com get 6 exemptions; qualified CAs get 9 and study only the final 4 papers.

Myth 5: “ACCA means you must move abroad”

ACCA opens the abroad option; it does not force it. Most of our ACCA students build careers in India — Big 4 offices, MNC finance teams, GCCs in Bengaluru, Gurugram, Pune and increasingly Jaipur itself. The global recognition is a parachute, not an obligation.

Myth 6: “Exemptions are a scam / you should take every exemption”

Both extremes are wrong. Exemptions are official ACCA policy — recognition of prior learning, granted against verified documents. But maximising exemptions blindly can backfire: skip too many foundation papers and the Strategic Professional level hits much harder. The right answer is personal: it depends on your university syllabus, marks and target papers — exactly the check we run for every student on the official ACCA exemptions calculator before they pay anything.

Myth 7: “Self-study is enough; coaching and mocks are a waste”

Some students do clear papers through self-study — usually the Knowledge level, where pass rates run 65–89%. The papers that end ACCA journeys (PM, AA, the Professional options) are application-and-technique papers, and technique cannot be self-assessed. An unmarked mock teaches you almost nothing; you will award yourself marks a real marker never would. Structured guidance plus evaluated mocks is not a luxury — it is the difference between the 41% and the 59% in a paper like PM.

The Pattern Behind the Myths

Notice that every myth pushes you toward either fear (“no value”, “too costly”) or complacency (“easy”, “self-study is enough”). The truth sits in the middle: ACCA is a rigorous, globally respected qualification that rewards well-informed, well-supported students. Get your facts from official sources and qualified counsellors — not forwards.
