Free US CMA Mock Tests in 2026: Where to Find Them, and What They Leave Out

Free US CMA Mock Tests in 2026: Where to Find Them, and What They Leave Out

Quick answer

Genuinely free US CMA practice in 2026 comes from four places: the IMA’s official sample case-based questions, the Prometric case-based question tutorial simulation, the free trials and knowledge quizzes published by the major review providers, and free resource-library articles. These are worth using. What they cannot give you is a full-length timed simulation under real conditions, feedback on why you got something wrong, and a readiness benchmark you can trust.

Searching for free US CMA mock tests is a completely sensible thing to do. The qualification is expensive, and there is real free material available if you know where to look. This article tells you where, and then tells you honestly what the free route cannot do — because knowing the gap is more useful than pretending it is not there.

The free resources actually worth your time

1. The IMA’s sample case-based questions

The IMA publishes free sample case-based questions for download. Since the September/October 2026 window, case-based questions are the only format on the English exam outside China, Taiwan (China) and Japan — essays are gone. If you have never seen a drag-and-drop or fill-in-the-blank response task, this is the first thing to open, and it is free.

2. The Prometric case-based question tutorial simulation

See the interface before exam day, not on it. The tasks include drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank, select-from-a-list and numeric calculation entries, and numeric responses carry explicit rounding instructions. Losing a mark because you entered a correct answer to the wrong precision is an avoidable and infuriating way to lose it.

3. Free trials and knowledge quizzes from the major review providers

Gleim, Hock and Wiley all offer some form of free trial or free knowledge quiz. These give you temporary access to real question banks written to exam standard. They are genuinely useful for calibrating how hard the questions are, which is difficult to judge from a syllabus.

4. Free resource-library articles

Several providers publish free articles on multiple-choice time management, the common case-based question mistakes, and how to use mock exams properly. The technique content in these is often the same content that sits inside paid courses.

5. The documents almost nobody opens

  • The ICMA Content Specification Outlines, effective 1 September 2024 — the definitive statement of scope and weightings. If a topic is not in it, it is not examinable, so it tells you what not to study as clearly as what to study.
  • The Learning Outcome Statements — the verb-level detail beneath each line: what you must be able to calculate, distinguish, evaluate or recommend.
  • The IMA Statement of Ethical Professional Practice — two pages, free, and worth a meaningful slice of a 15% area in Part 2. There is no excuse for approximating it.
  • The CMA Handbook — eligibility, registration, scoring, exam-day policy and calculator rules in full. The controlling document if anything conflicts.

What free mocks leave out

A real simulation

The US CMA is four hours: 100 multiple-choice questions in three hours, then two case-based questions in one hour, with a hard 50% multiple-choice gate between them. If you miss that gate, the case section is never shown to you and the exam ends there.

That gate is the single most important thing to rehearse, and a twenty-question free quiz cannot rehearse it. What it tests is whether you know the material. What the exam tests is whether you can hold pace across a hundred questions without over-investing in the hard ones — which is a stamina problem, not a knowledge problem.

Most candidates understand the material better than they think. What beats them is 100 questions in 180 minutes.

A reason

An auto-graded bank tells you the answer was C. It does not tell you why your reasoning produced B, and in the case-based section it cannot tell you whether your approach to the scenario was sound but your rounding was wrong, or whether you misread the requirement entirely. Those two errors need completely different fixes.

A benchmark you can trust

A scaled 360 out of 500 is not 72%. Scores are scaled for the difficulty of the particular exam form you were given, so raw percentages do not translate. The commonly used working benchmark is roughly 70% of available points across the multiple-choice questions and cases combined, with 75% or higher on a full mock treated as a reasonable indication of readiness. You cannot apply that benchmark to a twenty-question quiz.

How to use free resources well

  1. Start with the Content Specification Outlines and the Learning Outcome Statements, so you know the scope before you buy anything.
  2. Use the free trials early, to calibrate difficulty, rather than saving them for revision.
  3. Do the Prometric tutorial simulation once, early, so the interface never costs you a mark.
  4. Learn the IMA Statement of Ethical Professional Practice verbatim. It is free and it is 15% of Part 2.
  5. Use free question banks for topic-level practice throughout your twelve weeks — they are genuinely good for this.
  6. Then, roughly three weeks out, sit at least one full-length timed mock under real conditions: three hours plus one hour, on a desktop, no notes, no lookups, no AI.

That last step is where the free route runs out, and it is also the step that predicts the result.

Six mock exam mistakes, free or paid

  • Taking the first mock too early, before every study session is complete.
  • Treating it as a study session. The moment you look something up, it stops being a measurement.
  • Ignoring the timing. Three hours, then one hour.
  • Attempting it on a phone or tablet when the real exam is on a desktop.
  • Reading only the score instead of asking which topics hurt and whether each miss was a gap, carelessness, or the clock.
  • Doing it somewhere with notifications on.

Frequently asked questions

Are there genuinely free US CMA mock tests?

There is genuinely free practice material — the IMA’s sample case-based questions, the Prometric tutorial simulation, free trials and knowledge quizzes from the major review providers, and free resource-library articles. What is rarely free is a full-length, timed, four-hour simulation with feedback on your reasoning.

Does the US CMA still have essays?

Not on the English exam outside China, Taiwan (China) and Japan. Case-based questions became the only format from the September/October 2026 window. Free question banks that contain only essay questions are now out of date, however good they once were.

What score on a CMA mock means I am ready?

A commonly used benchmark is 75% or higher on a full-length mock — and even then, review every miss. Remember that the pass mark of 360 out of 500 is a scaled score, not a raw 72%, so mock percentages are an indicator rather than a direct translation.

How many mocks should I do before the US CMA exam?

Three, starting about three weeks out once every study session is complete. Space them four to five days apart and debrief each by syllabus area, labelling every miss as a knowledge gap, a careless error, or time pressure.

Can I pass US CMA using only free resources?

Some candidates do, particularly those with a strong accounting background. The risk is that free material rarely gives you a full timed simulation or feedback on your reasoning, and with roughly one candidate in two failing each part, a retake costs far more than the practice would have.

When you are ready for a real simulation

Megha Bhansali Classes runs a US CMA mock test series for Part 1 and Part 2, built for the current case-based question format. You get area-wise exam-style multiple-choice questions, case-based question practice in the new format, and three full evaluated mocks delivered timed and desktop-based, with a performance debrief by syllabus area.

The debrief is the part free resources cannot replicate: not just what you got wrong, but whether it was a gap, a careless error, or the clock — because each of those needs a different fix in the weeks you have left.
