How to Prepare for ACCA AFM: Your Calculations Are Fine. Your Discussion Is Why You Failed.
Quick answer
To prepare for ACCA AFM, spend at least half your practice time on the written discussion, not the numbers. AFM has the lowest pass rates of the Options papers, at 44–47%, and the examiner’s verdict repeats every sitting: candidates handle the calculations well but their discussion lacks depth and stays generic. Learn the free cash flow boundary cold, state every hedge in full, build workings one step per cell, and target commercial acumen and scepticism.
Advanced Financial Management is the paper where being good at maths is not enough, and the examiner has said so in almost identical words for several sittings running.
Sitting | Jun 2025 | Sep 2025 | Dec 2025 | Mar 2026 | Jun 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
AFM pass rate | 46% | 44% | 45% | 44% | 47% |
AFM runs the lowest pass rates of the Options papers — under half of every cohort passes. The reports are clear about why. Calculations are handled well. Discussion depth and professional skills are not.
Fifty per cent or more of most AFM requirements is discussion. Most candidates prepare as though it were ten per cent.
The ACCA AFM exam pattern
AFM is a three-hour computer-based exam worth 100 marks, pass mark 50, all compulsory. Every question is scenario-based and answered as a senior financial adviser would, with 20 professional skills marks across the paper.
Section | What you face | Marks | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
A — Q1 | One 50-mark case drawing on several syllabus areas at once — typically investment appraisal or valuation combined with financing and risk — usually answered as a report, with 10 professional skills marks. | 50 | 90 minutes |
B — Q2 | A 25-mark scenario question, frequently hedging — currency or interest rate risk. | 25 | 45 minutes |
B — Q3 | A 25-mark scenario question from the rest of the syllabus — valuation, restructuring, dividend policy or ESG themes. | 25 | 45 minutes |
What to study, in priority order
Tier 1 — the Section A multi-topic case, written as a report
- Investment appraisal — NPV, APV and international NPV: inflation and tax handled correctly, incremental working capital, APV with the financing side-effects, and in cross-border NPV forecasting the exchange rates and remitting the right cash flows.
- Business valuation using free cash flows: free cash flow to the firm excludes interest, and you deduct the debt value to reach equity value. These are the two most repeated errors in the reports.
- Report format and the 10 professional skills marks: analysis and evaluation marks come easily; commercial acumen and scepticism are gained by few. Question the assumptions, and connect your advice to what the board actually asked for.
Tier 2 — the Section B engine room
- Currency hedging: forwards, money market, futures and options — always state buy or sell, the contract month and the number of contracts, then discuss the assumptions of each method.
- Interest rate hedging: FRAs, futures, options and collars. A borrower buys the cap and sells the floor, and basis diminishes to zero at a constant rate.
- Option pricing with Black-Scholes: choosing the right inputs, knowing what N(d1) and N(d2) mean, and extending the model to real options on projects.
- Cost of capital: CAPM, ungearing and regearing betas, and Modigliani-Miller with tax — the engine inside APV and valuation questions.
- Mergers, acquisitions and restructuring: valuing the combined entity, cash versus share offers and the gain to each set of shareholders, plus demergers and reconstruction schemes.
- Multilateral netting and treasury management: short, mechanical marks the reports say are done well. Bank them fast.
Tier 3 — narrative topics that decide the marginal pass
- ESG and sustainability: a regular discussion requirement — the issues the company faces and the actions to recommend.
- Dividend policy and agency theory: classic discussion marks with a formula-free link to the scenario.
- Behavioural finance: short, definitional and frequently guessed on.
- Islamic finance: the instruments and how they differ from conventional debt. Quick study, certain marks.
Six corrections the AFM examiner keeps printing
- Free cash flow to the firm excludes interest — and remember to deduct the debt. The two most common valuation errors are deducting interest when calculating free cash flows to the firm, and failing to deduct the debt value from total company value when the question asks for equity value. Learn that boundary cold, because it decides the biggest marks in Question 1.
- State the hedge in full. Futures hedges are handled better than options hedges, but candidates repeatedly fail to state whether they are buying or selling, which contract month, and how many contracts. Set the hedge up in words first, and the follow-on calculations then earn marks even if a choice turns out to be wrong.
- Discuss the assumptions. Hedging discussion was often awarded maximum marks when it centred on the assumptions of forwards, futures and options — availability, flexibility, margin, basis risk, counterparty risk — applied to this company’s situation. Generic textbook lists of advantages and disadvantages score little.
- Use the spreadsheet like a professional accountant. Build workings up in cells the marker can follow, not as single mega-formulas or as numbers typed with no trail. A wrong answer with visible workings still earns method and own-figure marks. A wrong number alone earns nothing.
- Target commercial acumen and scepticism. Analysis and evaluation marks are gained quite easily; these two are gained by few. Earn them by questioning the data and assumptions in the scenario, and by linking every recommendation to the board’s stated requirement — for example, matching a hedging choice to a board that has asked for a limited range of outcomes.
- Deepen the discussion. Every discussion point should name a fact from the exhibits and land its consequence for this company. The Fact, then Why, then So-what habit you learned in the Applied Skills papers still applies at AFM — with more depth expected, not less.
An 8-week ACCA AFM study plan
Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
1–3 | Learn the concepts. Work through the Tier 2 techniques — currency hedging, interest rate hedging, Black-Scholes and real options, cost of capital, mergers and restructuring, and netting — learning each through past Section B scenarios, set up in words first and written out in full. |
4 | Professional skills and report writing. Every recent Question 1 report: structure, headings, commercial acumen and scepticism points drawn from the exhibits. Complete the Ethics and Professional Skills Module if you have not — ACCA data shows a 25% better success rate. |
5–6 | Section A to exam standard. NPV, APV, international NPV and free cash flow valuation inside full 50-mark cases — one Question 1-style case every second day, workings built cell by cell in the spreadsheet, report typed to time. |
7–8 | Three full mocks on the CBE Practice Platform, strictly timed at 1.5 minutes per mark, each debriefed against the examiner’s reports. |
If you are choosing between AFM and another Option
AFM suits students who enjoyed FM and who are comfortable writing advice, not just producing numbers. If you liked FM’s calculations but disliked its written sections, be honest with yourself: AFM asks for considerably more writing, and the pass rates show what happens to candidates who arrive expecting a bigger version of FM.
Frequently asked questions
Is ACCA AFM the hardest Options paper?
By pass rate, yes. AFM has run between 44% and 47% across the last five sittings, the lowest of the Options papers. The examiner’s reports attribute this to discussion depth and professional skills rather than to the calculations, which candidates generally handle well.
What is the difference between free cash flow to the firm and to equity in AFM?
Free cash flow to the firm excludes interest, because it represents the cash available to all providers of capital. To reach equity value from a firm valuation you then deduct the value of the debt. Deducting interest in the firm calculation, or forgetting to deduct debt at the end, are the two most repeated valuation errors in the reports.
How do I earn professional skills marks in ACCA AFM?
There are 20 across the paper. Analysis and evaluation come relatively easily from structured, developed answers. Commercial acumen and scepticism are earned by few — question the data and assumptions given in the scenario, and tie every recommendation back to what the board actually asked for.
How should I present hedging answers in ACCA AFM?
State the hedge in words before you calculate: whether you are buying or selling, which contract month, and how many contracts. Then run the numbers, then discuss the assumptions of the methods available — availability, flexibility, margin, basis risk and counterparty risk — applied to this company.
Should I take AFM or APM?
Choose on the basis of what you write well, not only on what you calculate well. AFM combines heavy computation with senior-level written advice, and its pass rates are the lowest of the Options. Read a past Question 1 from each paper in full before you decide.
