Scoring 45 In ACCA? Here Is Exactly Where The Last 5 Marks Are

Forty-five is the cruellest ACCA result. Forty and you know something went badly wrong. Forty-nine and you can barely function for a week. Forty-five sits in the middle: close enough that the paper clearly was not beyond you, far enough that you have no idea what to change.

Here is the important thing about a 45. It is almost never a knowledge score. A candidate who does not know the syllabus scores in the twenties and thirties. A 45 means you knew most of it and lost marks in the conversion from knowing to writing.

Those last five marks live in a small number of specific, identifiable places.

1. The requirement verb you did not answer

This is the largest single source of lost marks across every ACCA paper. Requirements use precise verbs and each one demands a different answer shape.

A candidate who explains where the requirement said discuss can lose three or four marks on a single requirement while writing something perfectly accurate.

2. The scenario facts you did not use

Marks in constructed response questions are attached to applying knowledge to the specific situation described. A technically correct but generic answer scores a fraction of what the same content scores when tied to the scenario.

A simple fix, and one that reliably recovers marks: before writing, underline three specific facts from the scenario — a number, a decision, a date, a change in circumstances — and make sure each one is named in your answer.

3. The last requirement you rushed

Time allocation is the most predictable mark leak in the qualification. The arithmetic is straightforward.

A ten-mark requirement is worth eighteen minutes. If you have spent thirty on it, you have taken twelve minutes from somewhere else, and the marks you gain from a perfect answer are worth less than the marks you lose from an abandoned one. The first few marks in any requirement are the easiest marks on the paper. The last few are the hardest.

Write your time allocation on the screen before you start each question, and stop when it runs out even if the answer is incomplete.

4. The professional marks you did not know existed

At Strategic Professional level, twenty of the hundred marks are professional skills marks — awarded for communication, analysis and evaluation, scepticism and commercial acumen, rather than for technical content.

Students who write technically strong answers in an unstructured way leave a meaningful portion of these on the table. Using headings, addressing the stated audience, structuring the response as the requirement asks for it, and showing appropriate professional doubt are all mark-earning behaviours, not presentational niceties.

5. The workings nobody could follow

Markers award marks for method as well as answer. If your working is a block of unlabelled numbers, a marker cannot see the method and cannot award the method marks, even when your final figure is correct. Label every working and reference it from the narrative. This costs seconds and protects marks you have already earned.

Should you request an administrative review?

If you failed by one or two marks, this question is unavoidable. Be realistic about what a review is. It is an administrative check that your script was marked and recorded correctly — it is not a re-mark or a second opinion on judgement. Scripts have already been through quality checks. The proportion of results that change is very small.

What to do differently next time

• Do not restudy the syllabus from the beginning. You already know it — a 45 proves that.

• Read the last four examiner reports for your paper and convert every repeated complaint into a written rule.

• Practise constructed response questions only, under strict timed conditions.

• Have at least two full scripts marked by someone qualified, and act on the feedback between the two.

• Spend as long reviewing each answer as you spent writing it.

The gap between 45 and 50 is five marks. Across a whole paper, that is one requirement answered properly, or one question not abandoned. It is a technique gap, and technique is far quicker to fix than knowledge — but only if someone shows you which technique is failing.
