ACCA Course Structure: Levels, Papers, and Syllabus Overview

The ACCA course is divided into 3 levels with 13 papers. Let us understand what each level comprises and what the syllabus of each paper includes.

Level 1: Knowledge Level

This level consists of three papers, and the exams are on demand.

  • Business and Technology (BT): This subject helps students understand all details of business operations, their internal and external environment. It will also help students understand the critical role of finance professionals in business and its operations.
  • Financial Accounting (FA): FA focuses on principles and concepts of financial accounting, accounting techniques, and the preparation of basic financial statements.
  • Management Accounting (MA): MA techniques help students develop a business plan, control, and monitor business performance. It also helps in understanding how finance is managed within an organisation to enhance business performance.

Level 2: Applied Skills Level

This level consists of six papers, and exams are held every quarter.

  • Corporate and Business Law (LW): LW develops knowledge and skills in understanding the general legal framework and specific legal areas relating to business, recognising the need to seek further specialist legal advice where necessary.

  • Performance Management (PM): PM is about applying MA skills and techniques to quantitative and qualitative information for planning, decision-making, performance evaluation, and control.

  • Taxation (TX): TX focuses on understanding the tax laws and systems applicable to individuals, companies, and groups of companies.

  • Financial Reporting (FR): FR is one of the core subjects of ACCA, helping to understand accounting standards and the framework used in preparing the financial statements of entities and group companies. FR also helps students develop skills to analyse and interpret financial statements.

  • Audit and Assurance (AA): AA helps students understand the basis of audit, how audit is performed, and covers all aspects of audit reporting and compliance procedures.
  • Financial Management (FM): FM helps students develop the knowledge and skills expected of a finance manager, relating to investment, financing, and dividend policy decisions.

Level 3: Professional Level

This level consists of two compulsory subjects and two optional subjects.

Compulsory Subjects

  • Strategic Business Reporting (SBR): SBR is an extension of the FR paper, where more practical and application-based accounting standards are discussed. It also focuses on complex issues involved in group accounting.
  • Strategic Business Leader (SBL): SBL mirrors the workplace and provides real-world challenges, allowing you to demonstrate a blend of technical, practical, and professional skills.

Optional Subjects (Choose any two)

  • Advanced Financial Management (AFM): AFM deals with applying relevant knowledge, skills, and professional judgment as expected of a senior financial executive or advisor when making or recommending decisions relating to the financial management of an organisation in both private and public sectors.
  • Advanced Performance Management (APM): APM focuses on applying strategic management accounting techniques in different business contexts and contributing to evaluating organisational performance and strategic development.
  • Advanced Taxation (ATX): ATX helps develop skills required to be a tax professional-providing relevant information and advice to individuals and businesses on the impact of major taxes on financial decisions and situations.
  • Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA): AAA is one of the core areas of work for an ACCA professional. It helps you deal with real-life situations and examples of how an audit is conducted.
